Having an organized kitchen will not only make cooking healthy meals for your family easier, but it will also remove to the clutter so you won’t end up buying things that you didn’t know you already had (well, at least not that often🤔).
You don’t necessarily need to have a big kitchen and a lot of cabinets to be able to store and organize everything within reach. It’s mainly about how you use the space you have to make it into a fully functional kitchen.
Here are 3 steps to organize your kitchen and transform it into an optimal space that inspires you to cook and cook often.

1. Declutter your kitchen
This is also known as the purging phase, so channel your Marie Kondo, power through and pull all the items out of your cupboards, drawers and everything in between. This gives you a clearer image of how much stuff you own. It can be quite shocking to see the number of things we tend to hoard, but it’s an essential step to get you to reevaluate how many kitchen supplies you really need.
I know it can be really hard to have everything out in the open, and your kitchen will definitely look like it’s been raided by a storm, but think of it as the first step towards an incredibly functional and organized kitchen.
Imagine how amazing it would be to have a clean and inviting kitchen where you can enjoy cooking and trying out new recipes.
Start by looking for duplicates, get rid of excess items and only keep what’s useful and necessary. By the end of this process, you should have three categories of items: items to keep, items to throw away and items to donate.

2. Deep clean, categorize, store
Now that all of your drawers, cupboards, and cabinets are empty, it’s time to do a deep and thorough clean. Wipe each section individually before devising a plan on how to store your items back. Think of your kitchen in terms of the different zones it offers, so food storage, food preparation, serve-ware, and cleanup.
Then for each zone, sort the different items into smaller sub-groups and place them closer to where you will be using them. Here’s an example of how you can do it:
- Zone 1: Everyday use: plates, bowls, glasses, and mugs
- Zone 2: Cooking items: pots, skillets, pans, mixing bowls, measuring cups, and cutting boards.
- Zone 3: Baking and cooking goods: herbs, oils, spices, flour, sugar, cereal, pasta …etc
- Zone 4: Drawers: silverware, spatulas, wooden spoons, cutlery, dishtowels, aprons, and tablecloths
- Zone 5: Pantry items: Canned and boxed goods
- Zone 6: Cleaning supplies
- Zone 7: Storage: Tupperware, tin foil, Ziploc bags, saran wrap, baking sheet paper
Opt for airtight containers to store your dry goods like pasta, cereal, rice, etc. If you’re working with limited space, choose smaller sizes for your kitchen cabinets.
Pro tip: If you want to give the illusion of spaciousness, keep your color palette to a minimum of one or two colors and use one uniform style of cabinets, you also need to keep your counters clear and neat.
After creating a solid infrastructure for your kitchen and dividing it into different zones, you can begin putting items back where they belong.
3. Maintain your clean kitchen
If you want to keep your kitchen clean and organized, you need to implement cleaning and decluttering into your daily routine. Establish systems that will help keep you on track.
You can start by labeling each different zone in your kitchen. If you label where each individual thing goes, then the rest of your household will not only know where to find things but also where to put things back.
When you transform your kitchen into a clean, uncluttered and functional space, you get one step closer to your goal of healthier eating and spending quality time with your family in the kitchen.
